Celebrate the "Dog Days of Summer!" with Your Pooch

The “Dog Days of Summer” have arrived! Have you ever wondered where this charming term comes from? You might be surprised to learn that the expression actually comes from the stars in the summer sky and has nothing to do with a ‘hot dog’!

From July 3 to August 11 each year, the brightest star visible from the earth, Sirius, rests in the same region of the sky as the sun. Sirius is part of Canis Major, the Greater Dog. Hence, the Dog Days of Summer!

So why not celebrate this delightful time with your own furry family member. Here are a couple of great ideas for enjoying ‘The Dog Days of Summer” with your dog!

HOW ABOUT A GREAT DOG PARK?

Sometimes a pup just needs to get his wiggles out! Dog parks are a great opportunity for socialization and exercise--for both you and Fido. Remember that dog parks require your attention at all times to keep you pup safe from dogs that may be less socialized.

Rincon Valley Dog Park is part of the Santa Rosa Park and Recreation system. And check out Potluck Friday. Bring your dog and a dish Fridays, April - November.

HOW ABOUT A DOG-FRIENDLY HIKE OR TRAIL?

Are you looking for dog-friendly, family fun? Come visit Howarth Park, the “jewel" of Santa Rosa. This fabulous community park, comprised of 152 acres, provides tons of recreational opportunities. There's a beautiful lake for fishing & boating, a softball field, tennis courts, picnic areas, unique playground structures, miles of hiking and jogging trails, and an amusement area featuring a miniature train ride, carousel, animal farm & pony rides for a small fee.

Enjoy swimming, kayaking and picnicking with the whole crew!
